AAA: Gas prices at lowest point for the year

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Gas prices in the Charlotte area are the lowest they've been this year according to AAA Carolinas. The average price per gallon of regular is about 20 cents lower than last month. The average price per gallon of regular in the Charlotte area was $3.27 Friday.

Alvin Joyner relies on his gas guzzling work van to make a living. So when prices go down at the pump, he takes home more money.

"This right here sure takes the burden off," he said.

Angela Daley of AAA Carolinas said one factor driving down the cost of gas in our area is the government shutdown. Furloughed workers aren't commuting to jobs, resulting in lower gas consumption. Even if there is a resolution to the shutdown, she expects prices to continue downward.

AAA Carolinas said gas in South Carolina is the second lowest rate in the nation. The state of Missouri is No. 1 for low gas prices.
