Action 9 helps consumer get tax refund after double health insurance enrollment

A woman says she got stuck paying for ‘two’ health insurance policies.

A woman told Action 9 that she had an Affordable Care Act plan, switched to private insurance, and was told she didn’t have to cancel the ACA plan.

However, she said she found out she owed the ACA thousands of dollars when she went to do her taxes.

She paid a tax relief company for help and was frustrated with them, so she turned to Action 9 attorney Jason Stoogenke, who helped her get a refund.

Stoogenke says:

  1. If you switch from an ACA plan, ensure you update your HealthCare.gov information so you don’t end up owing money.
  2. Be careful with tax relief companies, especially if they say you qualify for a certain program or require their entire fee upfront.
