ACTION 9: Watch out for new scam involving Gold

The FBI says scammers are looking for people worried that dollars aren’t worth what they once were or that the markets are about to crash.

“It preys on people’s distrust of the financial sector,” FBI SAC Reid Davis told Action 9 attorney Jason Stoogenke.

The criminals are convincing people to convert their cash into gold coins and bars. After all, according to published reports, gold is going for roughly $4,500 per ounce, about $1,000 more than a year ago.

The scammers actually direct you to legitimate companies that sell gold and ship to your home.

“Then, they say, ‘As soon as it gets to your residence, let us know, we’re going to send a carrier by, collect your gold. We’re going to put it in our vault under safekeeping so you don’t have to worry about that kind of money, value, stored in your house,” Davis said.

And the scammers even charge you for picking it up. Obviously, you never see your money or gold again.
