Additional charges filed against suspect in 4-year-old’s death

CHARLOTTE — Additional charges have been filed against a 17-year-old in connection with the fatal shooting of 4-year-old Caleb Flax.

The shooting happened in the early morning hours of Sept. 20.

Investigators said seven gunmen traveling in two stolen cars fired over 84 shots into four homes in 60 seconds on Grassy Patch Lane in northwest Charlotte.

One of those shots killed Caleb, and another wounded a neighbor in the leg, police said. The shooting was retaliation for an earlier shooting that happened on Silver Birch Drive.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, Ian Garland was the intended target in the first shooting.

On Oct. 5, police announced that additional charges have been filed against Garland, including two counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling, six counts of possession of a firearm by a minor, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, felony conspiracy, attempted larceny of a motor vehicle, and five counts of property damage.
