CHARLOTTE, N.C. — After months of Channel 9 investigations into the valet service at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, airport officials are looking into a new company to take over.
The company city officials are looking at is Atlanta-based AmeriPark. It's the same company that runs the valet service at South Park Mall, along with other high-end malls and airports throughout the country.
Park Incorporated runs the airport valet service now.
The company's contract runs out in June, and it's held the contract for more than a decade.
When a series of problems started coming from complaints from customers and police, city officials started taking note of what was happening with the service being provided.
Problems included workers being charged with stealing customers' cars and taking them on joyrides in October, a service suspension after customers complained their cars were being searched without them knowing about it and customers accusing valet workers of stealing everything from guns to radar detectors.
In January, airport officials announced plans to look for a new valet company to operate at the airport.
City leaders are now looking at a $2.3 million, three-year contract with AmeriPark.
Councilman David Howard said the company was proposing a rate increase to valet.
That increase is among many questions he and other council members have for the company before a vote.
A vote is expected Monday.
