Albemarle police say more arrests coming in counterfeit money investigation

ALBEMARLE, N.C. — Albemarle police say more arrests are coming in a counterfeit money investigation.

Police said since November, there have been 19 different reports of fake money passed at banks and businesses in the city.

"It's been a variety of currency. We've seen 50s, we've even seen $5 bills," said Capt. David Dulin with Albemarle police.

Dulin said Sunday, Daniel Sanders attempted to pass a fake $20 at a local market, but the clerk immediately realized something wasn't right.

Dulin showed Channel 9 how the fake bill was poorly cut at an angle and the off-center wording.

He said the clerk immediately called police, who arrested Sanders on counterfeit charges.

Police said that arrest led them to Heather Poplin, a home health care nurse who they said was in possession of five different fake currencies.

They are now working with the Secret Service and the Stanly County Sheriff's Office to determine who is the source of the counterfeit bills.

"It's going to go to someone bigger, who is possibly printing this money, distributing this money, maybe just a runner for someone else," Dulin said.
