Alexander Co. shelter not struggling to feed animals

TAYLORSVILLE, N.C.,None — Contrary to a rumor circulating in the community, the Alexander County Animal Shelter has not struggled to provide food for the animals in has in its care.

There was a rumor the shelter had no budget for food and did not have any on hand to give to the animals in its care. This is completely false, said Tres Widner, director of the Alexander County Animal Shelter.

“We have not even touched one cent in our budget for animal feed because of donations,” he said. “We have a lot who donate funds and animal feeds.”

Widner said people in the community have been generous in their monetary and supply donations to the shelter. That being said, he doesn’t want to discourage people from donating to the shelter.

“We’d rather have too much than not enough,” he said. “We have $500 a year set aside for feed in the budget.”

One company who donates generously is Walmart, which gives the shelter all of its feed bags that have any tears in them.

“Walmart is unable to sell it once it’s busted,” Widner said. “We have airtight storage containers, and we don’t have to worry about it going bad.”

He added that the shelter works well with other rescue and adoption groups to place animals in loving homes.
