Hurricane Irma is expected to hit islands in the Caribbean before it reaches Florida.
In order to help keep people safe, American Airlines canceled 14 flights from four different airports Tuesday through Thursday.
The airline added two flights Tuesday from St Kitts and St Maarten to help people escape to Miami.
Joy Brooks caught a flight to Florida out of the Charlotte Douglas Airport Tuesday.
She said she's worried because Hurricane Irma strengthened to a Category 5.
Brooks said crews are coming to her home in Florida, Wednesday, to board up her house. She wants to fly back to Charlotte once her home is safe.
"We aren't going to be stupid. We’re not going to stay. Nothing in that house is worth dying over," said Brooks.
Brooks said her friends in the Keys are panicking.
She said they are grabbing photos and other things and getting out.
"Prayers are very welcomed," she said.
American Airlines sent the following statement:
We have canceled the following flights below due to Hurricane Irma. To assist our customers, we have added two extra flights from St. Kitts and St. Maarten that will depart prior to the storm's arrival. Customers can contact our reservations team to be rebooked. Our Integrated Operations Center (IOC) in Fort Worth, Texas, continues to closely monitor the track of the storm, and we expect to make additional changes to our schedule as the storm continues to track west.
