CHARLOTTE — Experts say your daily cup of coffee could actually be good for your heart.

A new American Heart Association statement found that drinking up to five cups of coffee a day is safe for most adults and may even lower the risk of heart failure, stroke and Type 2 diabetes.

However, experts noted that these benefits primarily apply to instant or paper-filtered coffee, as unfiltered options can contain oils that increase bad cholesterol.

“Although research suggests that caffeine consumption may be associated with certain cardiovascular benefits for some people, it’s important to remember that there is no “one-size-fits-all” strategy for safe caffeine consumption,” Dr. Gregory M. Marcus, chair of the scientific statement volunteer writing group and professor of medicine at the University of California, said.

He recommended that individuals monitor their body’s response and consult health care providers to determine the best practices for them.
