BOONE, N.C. — Former Carolina Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks is heading back to his alma mater.
Wilks has been named a special assistant to Appalachian State Athletics.
Wilks was a defensive back at App State in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
He was part of the coaching staff that led the Panthers to a Super Bowl appearance in 2015.

Wilks will talk to fans during the Mountaineer spring tour, which starts at the end of the month.
