Area to see more growth around Charlotte Premium Outlets

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte Premium Outlets plans to commemorate its first anniversary with a celebration Saturday.

More than 100 stores now make up the outlets, which opened on July 31, 2014, with the promise to bring jobs and growth to the Steele Creek area.

Channel 9 was there as Gov. Pat McCrory took part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony and officials announced the outlets would create 900 jobs and generate $140 million.

"We're adding more jobs as we bring in new stores, and of course the development that's happened around us," said Sharon Campbell, who is the general manager of the outlets.

The future Alta Berewick Apartments are part of that development.

Construction started on the 266-unit luxury apartment complex months ago, according to Woods Partners LLC.

The complex is expected to be complete by next summer, but developers said they'll begin leasing some units as early as January.

Alta Berewick is just part of a much bigger plan that also involves the Town Center at Berewick.

The first phase includes a Harris Teeter, Walgreens and additional space for retail, restaurants and a hotel, according to the community's website. The first phase is expected to be complete by summer 2016.

"I think it's good for our community," said Carmen Williams who has lived in Steele Creek for 15 years. "This development is keeping a lot of people employed and hopefully our properties are going to go up."
