NEWLAND, N.C. — An 8 1/2-hour standoff in Newland with a man barricaded inside an RV has ended.
Sheriff deputies say that standoff at Big Mike’s campground in Newland started around 10 Thursday morning.
The Avery County Sheriff’s Office said it deployed a tactical response after learning the man was armed with a handgun and making threats.
Deputies were assisted by the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office and two negotiators with the SBI.
The sheriff’s office says the standoff ended around 6:30 p.m. with no injuries, and the person is now undergoing a mental evaluation.
