Attempted armed robbery triggers campus lockdown at Wingate University

WINGATE, N.C. — Wingate University was on lockdown as police searched the campus and surrounding areas for an attempted armed robbery suspect early Saturday morning.

Officials said Wingate police responded to an attempted armed robbery at an apartment in South Village.

They said they were looking for a man who is believed to be in his early 20s, has dreadlocks and is wearing a large black coat with a hood.

The school warned students it was not a drill and they needed to move to the nearest building. They were then instructed to lock all doors and windows, close blinds, turn off lights, silence cell phones and wait for more information from local law enforcement.

The lockdown lasted around 20 minutes and was lifted just after 7 a.m. Saturday.

Authorities have not said if anyone is in custody.
