CHARLOTTE, N.C. — This Belk bus, decked out in pink, will soon criss-cross the Carolinas and Tennessee for the department store chain's new challenge -- helping women beat breast cancer.

Belk teamed up with Charlotte Radiology, dedicating $6 million to stock a mobile mammography center with state of the art technology.

Dr. Matthew Gromet believes this bus and the free screenings will help save women's lives.

Inside, women will notice Belk’s attention to detail. The retail company aimed to make patients feel comfortable.

“The majority of women who die from breast cancer have not been getting mammograms,” Gromet said.

“We wanted it to be very stylish, to be very modern, comfortable. So the feel of it is very important to us,” Gromet said.

Patients will also have privacy with separate dressing rooms and an examination area.

Women will receive their test results immediately so they take action to stay healthy.

The program kicks off Jan. 28 in Charlotte and the bus will roll for nearly 300 days, helping women who need it most.

“It really reaches out. With the Belk name and promotion it should reach women who would otherwise not be served,” Gromet said.
