Channel 9’s Big 22 Player to Watch, Lincolnton linebacker Jalaythan Mayfield, is chasing a breakout season in his final year.
“Something crazy,” he said.

“Just flat out the best, (any) way you put it. Best player in the state, best player in the nation, and if I’m not that, I feel like I haven’t accomplished anything.”
Mayfield told Channel 9’s DaShawn Brown, he’s loved football since he was four years old, often dressing up as a coach while trailing his father on the sidelines.
He’s since committed to Indiana University.
Mayfield is also inspired by his older brother, who plays collegiately at Charleston Southern. During his recruitment, Mayfield said it was the only Division I program to extend him an offer.
“I wanted to do it for him,” he said of his brother.
“Just because he wasn’t able to get the shine that I get now, I kind of do it for him. Everybody that wasn’t able to, that I felt like should have had this opportunity.”
