RALEIGH — The House Health Committee will discuss a bill Tuesday that would fund research on the impact of magic mushrooms.

State lawmakers want to look at how psilocybin, commonly called magic mushrooms, could help people with anxiety and depression.

The Breakthrough Therapies Research Grant Fund would provide $5 million in funding for research into magic mushrooms and MDMA, also known as ecstasy.

The MDMA research is focused on treatment for post-traumatic stress syndrome.

This wouldn’t be the first time researchers looked into whether magic mushrooms help depression.

A recent study from the New England Journal of Medicine found a single dose improved symptoms in people with treatment-resistant depression.

Researchers also say improvements were more immediate compared to traditional anti-depressants.
