Blumenthal CEO talks impact of Broadway closures on Charlotte’s theater scene

CHARLOTTE — The pandemic will delay the return of Broadway smash hits “Hamilton” and “Wicked” to Charlotte.

Both were scheduled to arrive in town in the upcoming months.

Those shows are still scheduled to come to town — it’s just a matter of when.

But, Broadway has shuttered its theaters until at least May 30. That will have a trickle-down effect on plans to bring touring versions of those productions and large-scale concerts to town, says Tom Gabbard, CEO of North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Arts Center.

“It’s all intertwined,” Gabbard says. “For now, the national touring scene is really paralyzed.”
