DENVER, N.C. — Crews recovered a woman's body from Lake Norman Tuesday night, according to officials.

Late in the afternoon, Denver Fire Department officials confirmed they were looking for a woman who went underwater in Lake Norman.

The drowning occurred off Mitchell Lane in Denver.

The victim was identified as Elisabeth Anna Burford, 36, of Lincolnton.

At 4:15 p.m., a man called 911 and said he and a female were swimming when he went inside a home, authorities said in a news release. When he returned, the woman was missing.

The friend said Burford was in the water not wearing a life jacket but had a flotation device.

She did not know how to swim.

Crews searched two-and-a-half hours before recovering her body.
