Burke County students to receive free meals this school year

BURKE COUNTY — Burke County Public Schools will provide free meals to all students this upcoming school year.

On August 28, the first day of school, BCPS students will get free breakfast and lunch from the cafeteria.

BCPS is now apart of the Community Eligibility Provision which provides a meal option for districts and schools in high-poverty areas. Families will no longer have to fill out the free and reduced meal application because of the provision.

“We’re so excited to feed students breakfast and lunch for free this school year,” Daniel Wall, BCPS Director of Child Nutrition said. “Each BCPS student can get a filling, nutritious lunch from the cafeteria without worrying about the stigma of the price of their lunch.”

BCPS has also changed the price of their adult menu items. Teachers and parents can purchase an entrée and two sides from the cafeteria for only four dollars.

The BCPS school cafeterias will still have Premium Days where it offers premium entrées for the same price as regular lunches. This initiative began last year and the entrees are free for students and $2.50 for adults.

People can use cash, checks, or a student’s meal account to purchase items in the cafeteria.
