CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. — The Cabarrus County School Board announced on Monday that it will make masks optional for all students, staff and visitors beginning Oct. 26.
In a motion that passed 4-3, the board adopted revised metrics from the task force and used them to make the decision.

The district decided that they can make masks optional after three of the following key metrics are achieved in the county:
The COVID-19 task force is made up of health professionals, school district professionals and parents.
Transportation will remain mask-mandated. Board members agreed that if metrics increase, there will be another special called meeting to decide whether they need to reverse course.
- Percent positive weekly rate must be less than 8% -- Currently at 7%
- Number of positive cases in the last 14 days in Cabarrus County must be 547 or less -- Currently at 815
- Percent of news CCS students newly positive must be less than 8% - Currently at less than 1%
- Total quarantines must be less than 8% - Currently less than 1% at 255 students
