Caldwell Co. police arrest son for murdering father

LENOIR, N.C.,None — Police in Caldwell County have accused a man of killing his father on Tuesday.

Police said they received a call from a family member who couldn't reach Jones Riggs.

The family members asked police to check on him and when they got to the house they said they found Riggs, 58, dead inside.

Police said it appeared that Riggs was stabbed multiple times.

Neighbors in the area are having a hard time understanding why anyone would want to hurt Riggs.

"He has no enemies.  Nice as could be. The lady who lives behind him he took apples yesterday.  He was friends with everybody.  (He) would give you the shirt off his back," said neighbor Dale Hanson.

Those neighbors found it even more difficult to hear that Riggs own son is now accused of killing him.

Shorty after his arrest, Joshua Riggs, 21, would only answer one of Channel 9 reporter Dave Faherty's questions.

"Are you sorry about all this? Are you remorseful?" Faherty asked

"How could I not be," he said.

Joshua Riggs did not live with his father at the home in the Lower Creek community.

Jones Riggs was well-known for walking through the neighborhood.  Story Huldah knew him well and has been his neighbor all his life.

"He was a very kind person and caring," Huldah said.

The biggest question facing police is finding the motive behind this slaying.  They are not saying why and neither is Joshua Riggs.

Police said the cause of death is still unknown pending the results of an autopsy.
