Carolina Panther’s quarterback Cam Newton made a surprise appearance Thursday night at the Target store on Rea Road in Charlotte.

Newton helped guest’s shop for Father’s Day.

The surprised shoppers had one-on-one time with Newton and also got some shopping advice about what they should buy for their dads for the holiday.

The league's MVP said he's all about the present -- and improving as a player and team leader before the 2016 season begins.

Earlier in the week Newton said he isn't focused on this past February's Super Bowl -- or the one that will be played next year in Houston, for that matter.

Newton's comments reflected the overriding message coach Ron Rivera emphasized this week to players -- that the Panthers need to avoid complacency.

On Thursday, the Panthers confirmed to Channel 9 that they have extended Rivera's contract through the 2018 season.
