Massive I-77 car fire intentionally set after being stolen, police say

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Firefighters were called to a massive car fire that broke out on Interstate 77 Wednesday morning.

Police had to block the shoulder area on I-77 near the ramp to West Boulevard where the car burst into flames around 4:30 a.m.

Police said the car was stolen Tuesday evening from Eastcrest Drive and was most likely set on fire.

A Department of Transportation camera caught it all on tape and you could see a large plume of smoke coming from the vehicle.

Firefighters were able to put out the fire and reopen the road around 5:30 a.m.

Police have not said if they have any suspects.
