MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C.,None — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating a stolen car found fully submerged in a residential pond Wednesday evening.
Officers told Eyewitness News the 2005 Nissan Morano was in the pond for several days. The car was reported stolen Monday.
Firefighters found the car in the water near Country Lane, in west Mecklenburg County. Officers don't know exactly when the car was dumped in the pond.
More than 20 firefighters spent several hours at the pond Wednesday night. At first they didn't know if anybody was inside the car.
It was submerged under 20 feet of water, so the fire department's dive team was called in to investigate.
The dive team went into the water and determined that the Nissan was empty. After running the tags, police learned the car was recently reported stolen.
There are only about a dozen houses in the Country Lane neighborhood. Neighbors told Eyewitness News they didn't hear or see any suspicious activity this week.
Roger Dills came home from his granddaughter's elementary school recital to a swarm of police cars and fire trucks. He said he'll be locking his doors after this scare.
"It makes a shiver run up your spine. I mean, we sleep a few yards from here, and it gives us a concern," Dills said. "I've never seen anything like this scene here before."
CMPD is still investigating.
