INDIAN LAND, S.C. — A driver was charged with DUI after troopers said they veered off a busy road and plunged into a pond in Indian Land, South Carolina.

The Highway Patrol said it happened Wednesday afternoon along Highway 521 outside the Sun City retirement community.

Cell phone video from a Channel 9 viewer showed a bystander springing into action, jumping into the pond, and swimming out to the partially submerged car.

Neighbors were still talking about the rescue on Friday.

When that man reached the car, he can be seen struggling to open the driver-side door before eventually pulling someone through the window and swimming them back to shore.

“Thank goodness somebody came to save them,” said Sue Jula. “I’m happy that they did.”

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said the passenger inside the car also got out safely. Crews were able to pull the sedan out of the pond hours later.

Troopers said they charged the driver, 26-year-old Brittany Tallent, with DUI.

Drivers and neighbors were shocked to see the crash and rescue unfold. Now, they want to know who the hero was so they can be properly thanked.

“I think it’s phenomenal that somebody would do that,” said neighbor Ted Matuga. “You know, somebody saw it and called the police and they were able to get him out.”
