WINGATE, N.C. — Surveillance video from a Union County convenience store shows the moment a fuel pump erupted into flames.
Wingate volunteer firefighters responded to the Shell gas station on Highway 74 and Stewart Street around 10:30 p.m. last Friday night and found the pumps on fire.
The first firefighters who arrived were able to knock down the fire quickly and no one was hurt.
Fire Chief Travis Stegall told Channel 9 that the pump which caught fire had been malfunctioning and was not in use for customers. He said gas station employees were trying to fix it and the pump began leaking gasoline. Within minutes, it caught fire.
