CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Families will come together Thursday night in one of the neighborhoods most affected by the new Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools boundary lines.
Students living in the Chantilly neighborhood will be switched from one of the top-ranked high schools to a D-rated school.
Parents are considering everything, from an outright rejection of the CMS boundary changes to challenging the district to redraw the boundary lines all over again.
Parents will consider the following options at Thursday’s meeting:
Students who would have gone to Myers Park High School or East Mecklenburg High School, both B-rated schools, will now be sent to Garinger High School, which has a D rating.
They will either reject the boundary changes or they will accept them, but ask CMS to start figuring out how to improve Garinger High School.
They could also demand CMS rezone the boundaries differently to send children to the Cotswold Billingsville paired elementary schools and Alexander Graham Middle School while allowing them to stay at Myers Park High School.
They will also consider asking CMS to feed their elementary students to McClintock Middle School and East Mecklenburg High School.
"At the end of the day, we're all parents and we want to do what's best for our children and that's got to be top priority as we move forward," said Chantilly resident Andy Sontag.
CMS will host two public meetings to take feedback from parents before their final vote on May 24.
The school district is hosting its own information sessions at all of the schools impacted. On Thursday alone, there are 18 meetings, and dozens more next week.
There are also two public hearings before the school board votes on the plan. The changes would go into effect in the 2018-2019 school year.
