CHARLOTTE, N.C. — On what would have been her 100th birthday, fans of beloved actress Betty White honored her memory and dedication to protecting animals by donating to rescue organizations.
Last week, posts about the #BettyWhiteChallenge quickly flooded social media sites, suggesting fans give at least $5 to an animal rescue of their choice on Jan. 17.

A representative with the Humane Society of Charlotte said the organization received more than 1,000 donations, which resulted in approximately $70,000.
“It was incredible, and we’re extremely grateful,” said Emily Cook, marketing and communications manager for HSC. “The funds raised are going directly back to our shelter to help support the welfare of the animals that are currently in our care.”
Cook said the organization received a $10,000 donation from Carolina Panthers owners David and Nicole Tepper.
Stephanie Rivera, wife of former Panthers head coach Ron Rivera, donated $4,000 that will help to underwrite the adoption fees of several of HSC’s long-term residents.
