Charlotte Catholic wins school's fifth state title; Mallard Creek falls in finals

Lamagea McDowell scored two touchdowns to lead Charlotte Catholic to a 28-14 win over Havelock Saturday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3A state championship game Saturday at Duke University.

Quarterback Chris Walton added a rushing touchdown and threw a touchdown pass to Michael Neel.

The Cougars claimed their fifth state title, and the second in three years.

The Mavericks lost to Wake Forest 21-0 in the NCHSAA 4AA state championship game.

Mallard Creek’s bid for its fourth state championship in five years fell short Saturday at BB&T Field in Winston Salem.

After three scoreless quarters, Wake Forest closed the game with 21-unanswered points.
