Airport passengers in Charlotte will have more room to get around the ticketing and baggage levels starting next week as well as a new underground tunnel to get from the terminal to hourly parking and rental car areas.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport officials took local media on a tour of the new 90,000-square-foot lobby space — space that extends from the existing main terminal opened in 1982. The new space will open July 27.

Known as the west-side expansion, it represents just over half of the planned 175,000-square-foot overall terminal expansion. The rest — the east side — will open late next summer.

“Opening this piece of the project allows us to not only continue finishing the expansion of the new segment of the east side of the lobby but it also allows us to start the renovation phases of the project,” CLT Chief Operating Officer Jack Christine said today. “So, that we can stay on target to complete the project in 2025.”
