CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Rescue crews responded Friday to a child trapped in a 12-foot drain at the YWCA on Park Road, according to the Charlotte Fire Department.
The 2-year-old boy was rescued and was taken to the hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries, MEDIC said.
Kirsten Sikkelee with the YWCA knows the boy's family well.
She said the boy had finished his swimming lesson.
The family was leaving when the boy, who she said likes to play hide and seek, ran to the other side of the car, and slipped and fell down the drain.
When emergency crews arrived the sound of the sirens calmed the boy down, Sikkelee said.
"As he learned they were coming for him, his very frightened cries became kind of little cheers," she said. "They were so kind and gracious, and called him by name and kept him calm."
Firefighters removed the grate, and used a ladder to climb down and rescue the boy.
Within minutes the boy was rescued.
The boy was scared but not seriously hurt.
