Charlotte firefighter shares story of cancer survival

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — According to research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, firefighters are 14% more likely to die from cancer than the average person.

Channel 9 anchor Brittney Johnson has been following the push to give firefighters more protection against this deadly threat.

She recently met with Charlotte firefighter Justin Barringer, who is a cancer survivor. The father of four was diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

While undergoing six months of chemotherapy, Barringer moved into a role created for him on the health and safety committee.
