CHARLOTTE — A motorcyclist was killed Tuesday night in a wreck involving an SUV on Interstate 85 in northeast Charlotte, the fire department tweeted.
The southbound lanes before the Sugar Creek Road Exit were shut down for a few hours after the crash, around 7:15 p.m.
According to state troopers, a Volvo SUV was heading southbound on I-85 when the driver lost control, crossed across all the lanes and slammed into the center barrier wall. Witnesses said that at the same time, a motorcycle was speeding in excess of 100 mph in the southbound lanes and slammed into the SUV, which had just crashed into the barrier wall.
No names have been released.
Shortly after the fatal wreck, a box truck crashed and flipped about five miles away on I-85. All southbound lanes of I-85 were closed near the Mallard Creek Church Road Exit.
Both stretches of I-85 reopened around midnight.
No further information has been released.
