Charlotte City Council members say they do not want to go for the Model Cities Initiative.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Estella Patterson asked leaders on Monday night to consider applying for the grant money
The Department of Justice is offering up to $300 million for public safety projects in two to four cities.
However, city leaders told the chief and city manager they are worried the money will increase federal law enforcement in Charlotte, such as Operation Charlotte’s Web.
They also worried the money could be tied to immigration enforcement. The city manager says council made their position clear. It is currently not on a future agenda.
