Charlotte radio legend Robert Raiford dies at 89 years old

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte radio legend Robert Raiford died Friday at 89 years old.

Raiford was best known for his outspoken opinions on the John Boy and Billy Big Show for 30 years.

The producer of the John Boy and Billy show said the crew is still reeling from the loss.

Raiford, a Concord native, majored in communications at the University of South Carolina and got his start in broadcasting in 1944 at WEGO.

Johnny Isley, known to listeners as John Boy, said Raiford had the mind of a well-read intellectual but was trapped in the body of a grumpy old guy.

His career ended in 2016 after he suffered a stroke.
