Charlotte tow truck driver arrested before boarding international flight

CHARLOTTE — Customs and Border Protection says a Charlotte man is in custody after being arrested on a felony fraud warrant before boarding an international flight.

Larry Burgin is charged with obtaining property by false pretense. He was released by jail after posting a $2,500 secured bond.

The affidavit says Burgin runs a tow company called “Hitch and Haul Towing.”

According to the affidavit, in June, a Cornelius man was grabbing food and came out into the parking lot to see his car on the back of Burgin’s tow truck. The affidavit says Burgin made the man send him $400 through Zelle to drop his car. The victim did so, but the affidavit says Burgin then told him the money never went through. So he made the man go to Cashion’s and get $400 from the ATM. The affidavit says Burgin promised to send the man back his $400 through Zelle but he never did.

Police say Hitch Haul Towing is not a registered business in North or South Carolina and was not contracted to tow from that lot.

CBP did not say where Burgin was attempting to fly to. The agency didn’t confirm if it was to evade the outstanding warrant.
