CHESTER COUNTY, S.C. — A former fire chief and a sitting county councilman in Chester County have been indicted on criminal charges, including misconduct in office and the alleged misuse of Hurricane Helene relief funds.
Former Richburg Fire Protection District Chief Stewart T. Melton and current Chester County Councilman John Harris Agee were charged following an indictment announced Tuesday.
Chester County officials issued a statement Wednesday morning acknowledging the charges. County government officials were aware of the criminal investigation and had launched an internal investigation into the matter.
Investigators say Melton improperly obtained government dollars intended for Hurricane Helene relief and misrepresented the fire department’s response efforts. Melton is charged with misconduct in office and obtaining property by false pretenses.
The indictment further states that Melton obtained two Chevy Caprice police cars from the state surplus after claiming they were for the fire department. Investigators allege Melton then sold those vehicles to Agee for his personal use. Agee is charged with conspiracy based on those allegations.
Chester County Councilman Corey Guy addressed the charges facing the officials.
“It’s just unfortunate for all parties involved. The accused party as well as first and foremost the citizens of Chester County. It’s just an unfortunate situation,” Guy said.
