The wreck happened early Wednesday afternoon in a work zone on Highway 52 between Bowers and Cottenville roads, near Norwood in Stanly County.

The woman and one of the children, a 9-year-old, were flown to a hospital with serious injuries.

Troopers said logs smashed through the vehicle’s windshield when the car hit the back of the truck.

The two other children were also taken to a hospital but will be OK, troopers said. Investigators told Channel 9 the mother, identified as Brittany Mauldin of Burgaw, and one of the children were not wearing seatbelts.

In addition to the DWI charge, Mauldin faces the following charges:

  • Two misdemeanor child abuse charges
  • Failure to reduce speed
  • Driving on a suspended driver’s license

There has also been an arrest warrant issued on a charge of felony child abuse, troopers said.
