CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Four adults and a child were able to escape to safety after their home caught on fire on Commonwealth Avenue in east Charlotte early Friday morning, officials said.

The people inside told emergency crews the fire started in an upstairs bedroom. They said they tried to put it out before calling 911.

Firefighters were able to get the flames under control in 15 minutes and said most of the damage inside the house was from the smoke.

Fire officials said discarded smoking material led to the fire that caused about $11,000 in damage and displaced one person.

No injuries were reported.
