CMPD: 14-year-old charged after accidentally shooting 12-year-old brother

CHARLOTTE — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have charged a 14-year-old with possession of a handgun after officers said the teen accidentally shot his 12-year-old brother over the weekend.

The shooting happened Saturday morning on Flint Street, just outside uptown near Johnson C. Smith University.

The boy was back home on Monday, recovering.

Police said the 12-year-old was seriously injured but is expected to be OK.

Investigators haven’t said where the 14-year-old got the gun, but his mother told Channel 9 he found it on his walk to a store just around the corner from his house. She said she didn’t know he had the weapon until a shot was fired at her house, hitting her 12-year-old son in the leg.

Police ruled the shooting an accident.
