CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Channel 9 learned that 44 percent of active shooter training the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department involves workplace violence.

Trainers have worked with more than 300 organizations in Mecklenburg county and got their latest request Thursday.

“That's exactly what we prepare and train people for here in Mecklenburg County,” CMPD Officer Johnathan Frisk said about the Charleston incident.

Frisk is part of a training team teaching survival skills to local businesses, bars and churches if they are faced with an active shooter.

“What we talk about in our training is 44 percent of the time, these things actually happen in businesses,” Frisk said.

The free two-hour training has no role play but offers information on how to survive a similar incident.

The training includes maintaining distance and running away.

“We want you to take some action, an action is going to save your life,” Frisk said.

Frisk said the numbers also suggest that what happened in Charleston could happen anywhere.

Organizations interested in signing up for active survival training can contact Frisk at jfrisk@cmpd.org. The service is free, and only applies to organizations within Mecklenburg County.
