CHARLOTTE, N.C. — UPDATE: Police charged a man on Thursday for his involvement in Wednesday's double shooting where one man died.

Officials with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office have charged Canell Rayshaun Johnson, 31, with murder and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

During the investigation, detectives were able to identify Johnson as the suspect in this case and obtained a warrant for his arrest, police say.

Investigators said the case spans across two crime scenes.

Officers initially responded to a disturbance call at a home on Coolbrook Court at 11:18 p.m. Tuesday. When they arrived they went inside and spoke with a man who told them he did not need help. Officers did not find anyone else who needed help either, so they left.

Just after midnight, police were called to the 300 block of Archdale Drive and found a woman who had been shot. She was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. She was identified as Tonya Carter, 43.

A few minutes later officers returned to Coolbrook Court, about two miles away from Archdale, and found a man who had been shot and killed. Police identified him as 23-year-old Terrence White.

Investigators said White and Carter were both inside the home on Coolbrook Court when they were shot. Carter was driven by an acquaintance to Archdale, where they called 911.

White’s brother said he loved to play football and was a utilities worker and Channel 9 spoke with one of White's best friends, who said he had just spoken to him last night before the shooting.

"I wish I could have went down there and brought him up here -- something, whatever went on -- help him out some,” said Zach Jones.
