CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police gave Channel 9 new information Tuesday about the most dangerous locations for speed-related crashes in the Queen City, as the department kicks off ‘Operation Slow Down Charlotte.’
Motorists are going to see more police officers on East Independence Boulevard as CMPD said they are cracking down on the area's seven top spots for speed-related crashes.

This is not your typical speed grab though. CMPD announced that multiple officers will be deployed on the roads to crack down on speeding –- and their target Tuesday was East Independence.
Other roads with an increased presence are West WT Harris Boulevard, North Tryon Street, Providence Road, South Boulevard, Central Avenue and Beatties Ford Road.
According to CMPD, there have been more than 3,000 speed-related crashes on those roads over the past three years, and more than 500 of them were fatal, with hundreds injured.
Police said they want to prevent those injuries - and that it isn't about making money.
"Not a dime goes to the city, not a dime goes to the police department,: said Major Andrew Kornberg. “It doesn't go to hire more officers. It doesn't do any of that."
That money goes to schools.
There's no timetable for how long the operation will last and CMPD is using data to determine where they will target next. If officers see a lot of cars going faster than the speed limit they may keep an increased presence longer in a certain area.
