CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department needs the public’s help identifying a person of interest after a video shows someone throwing a soda can-sized mortar at officers during a protest.

Charlotte Crime Stoppers posted three pictures from a surveillance camera on Twitter Thursday afternoon offering a $1,000 reward for anyone who has information that leads to an arrest.

The incident happened on May 30 during the protests in uptown.

CMPD posted a video of the mortar attack on the department’s Facebook a few days later.

In the video, officers and people can be seen standing around when someone starts yelling, and then there is a massive blast.

The mortar exploded and struck an 11-year veteran CMPD officer, police said. His clothes caught fire and he suffered second-degree burns. He was also struck in the face and arm with shrapnel and lost hearing for two days, police said.

CMPD said despite the incident, the officer continued to work and finished his 14-hour shift.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. The FBI is also assisting in the investigation.
