CHARLOTTE — A man was taken into custody after an hourslong Charlotte-Mecklenburg police SWAT standoff in a northwest Charlotte neighborhood on Tuesday.

At around 6:30 a.m., police said they tried to arrest a man wanted on several warrants at a home on Forest Cross Drive, near Waters Trail Drive. People who lived at the house told officers that the man was inside, but he refused to come out.

The CMPD SWAT team was then called to the scene, but after several hours of not making contact with him, they deployed nonlethal chemical munitions into the home.

Police said there was still no response from the man so SWAT team members eventually went inside the home to search and found him hiding. Authorities arrested the man and said the situation ended peacefully. The man’s name has not been released.

No officers were hurt during the incident or fired their weapons, CMPD said, and police are not looking for any other suspects.

Neighbors told Channel 9′s Susanna Black that the neighborhood is usually a quiet place and they were shocked to wake up to a SWAT situation.

“There were cops with AR-15s on my lawn. It’s crazy,” Jesse Mercado said. “Waking up and seeing tactical gear everywhere, it’s different. It just makes you feel like, ‘Oh wow, this can happen right here on my lawn.’”

Officials have not released any other details at this point.
