“When it involves the little children, that's even worse,” said Allison Hall, who lives near the school.

The principal called police after the discovery.

A message was sent to families saying officials received information that a weapon was on campus.

“It saddens me,” resident Mike Miller said. “I couldn't imagine being a kid going to school.”

School officials said a gun was found but it did not contain ammunition.

Below is the full message sent home to families:

Good afternoon Cotswold Elementary families. This is Principal Hash calling to provide you with information regarding an incident at our school. Administration received a report that a weapon was on our campus. Law Enforcement was immediately notified, and this matter was investigated with school administration. During the investigation, a firearm was found and did not contain ammunition. No students or staff were harmed or threatened. It is a serious violation to bring weapons onto a school campus. Any student violating the CMS Code of Student Conduct will receive appropriate disciplinary action. It is my goal to provide a safe environment for teaching and learning. If a student is aware of a weapon on our campus or any school campus, I ask that they tell a school employee immediately. Please have a conversation with your student about making sure they are not bringing inappropriate items to school. I appreciate your support of our school and our students.
