CHARLOTTE — The second season of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools High School Flag Football League started on Saturday.
The 24 teams taking part in this season started the new year at Olympic High School. CMS is the first district to offer a girls’ league in North Carolina. It’s currently a club-level sport, but will be recognized as a varsity sport in eight states this year.
Carolina Panthers Charities is providing $60,000 to the program, including custom Nike team uniforms.
“It’s also created opportunities for these young ladies. We had one who was offered a scholarship to play at the next level of flag football,” Turner said. “It’s creating different paths to college for some of the young ladies.”
CMS athletics director Ericia Turner says the league has already created opportunities for its players.
The season will wrap up with a championship tournament on May 14 at Bank of America Stadium.
