CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ top priority is keeping firearms out of schools as they bring in metal detectors and now, they're trying to get students invested in helping.
CMS launched a new effort Thursday to keep schools safe.
CMS said it’s conducted as many as 17 screenings so far and haven't found any guns during their search.
However, guns are still in schools, which is why officials are launching a new social media campaign called #GunsCant.

They're encouraging students to post what they can do and what guns can't do.
The district has been aggressively working to step up security measures on campus after a deadly shooting at Butler High School last year and multiple reports of guns on campus
The effort is meant to be another layer on top of school screenings and support services, including mental health.
“I feel like we’ve had discussions in different classrooms and different kind of settings schoolwide and classroomwide,” said Kendall Sanders, vice president of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Youth Council. “So, a lot of them are concerned and they have a lot of opinions.”
CMS wants the campaign to be about hope and not fear.
There were five guns found on CMS campuses within a two-week period last month.
