CHARLOTTE, N.C — Charlotte-Mecklenburg School leaders are waiting anxiously in anticipation of the county manager’s budget proposal, which will be presented Tuesday.
CMS leaders are asking for a major increase in spending -- $440 million for the 2017-2018 school year.
That request is up $27 million from last year.
The request would make CMS's total budget almost $1.5 billion.
Below is how some of the CMS monies would be distributed:
- $10 million would pay for salary increases for teachers
- Another $5 million to pay for 60 counselors, psychologists and social workers
- $12.1 million would pay for the district's growth, which includes funding for five new schools, anticipated enrollment at charter schools, school resource officers, and pay increases for athletic directors and coaches
Some county commissioners believe CMS should be asking the state for more money, not the county.
County Manager Dena Diorio will present the CMS budget Tuesday, before a public hearing on it June 5.
County commissioners are expected to vote on it June 20.
