CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The COVID-19 pandemic opened up one teachers eyes to the needs in her community. “Food insecurity, families struggling with transportation issues, job issues and digital literacy skills,” said Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools teacher Paris Speight.

So, Speight opened The Lighthouse, a new resource center in east Charlotte.

There, people can get food and school uniforms , and parents can receive digital training.

“This is so important because families do need food sometimes,” mother Ana White Martinez said. “They don’t want to tell people they do need food for their kids.”
